기억으로는 2004년에 나온 노래인 줄 알았는데, 다시 찾아보니 2003년에 나온 노래였다. 만으로 20년이 된 노래라니, 세월의 흐름이 참으로 놀랍다. 어제 퇴근길에 우연히 머릿속에서 이 노래가 재생되는 게 아닌가. 정말이지 20년만에 다시 꺼내듣는 노래가 주는 감회는 대단하다.

당시 어렸던 나는 라디오를 엄청 많이 들었다. 생일 선물로 받은 128mb 용량의 아이리버 MP3에는 라디오 기능이 함께 포함되어 있었다. 집과 학원을 오가며 정말 열심히 라디오를 들었다. 내 방에서 공부할 때는 카세트 테이프에 함께 내장된 라디오를 들었다. 주로 91.9 FM4U를 들었는데, 그때나 지금이나 저녁 6시부터 8시는 배철수의 음악캠프였다. 해외음악을 메인 테마로 하는 프로그램이라서 광고 중에 Universial Music 광고도 있었는데, 그 중 브리트니 스피어스의 Me against the music이 수록된 앨범 "In the zone"을 열심히 광고하던 기억이 난다.

2003년 기준으로 가장 센세이녈한 사운드를 선보였던 작품이라고 평가하고 싶다. 우리나라에서 그 해 가장 핫했던 노래가 이효리의 10 minutes이었다. 그에 비하면 사운드의 완성도가 어마어마하다. 간결한 기타 리프와 드럼, 그리고 브리트니와 마돈나의 보컬만으로 곡을 이끌어간다. 정말 핫하고 섹시한 사운드이다.

하나 아쉬운 점은 멜로디 라인이 가미된 싸비 부분이랄까. 만약 같은 벌스로 최근에 노래를 냈다면 이 싸비 부분이 대폭 수정되지 않았을까 싶다. 그래도 이를 감안하더라도 정말 센세이셔널한 곡 진행이 아닐 수 없다. 그리고 20년 전의 브리트니 스피어스의 미모는 정말 다시 봐도 놀랍다. 2004년인가 2005년에 브리트니 스피어스가 내한해서 SBS 인기가요에 출연했던 것이 문득 기억난다.
